CASPER — A student at Natrona County High School was removed from the campus by law enforcement Monday after an incident involving a weapon.
School district spokesperson Tanya Southerland said once the school’s Casper Police Department resource officer and officials learned of the potential for someone with a weapon at the school, the student was sought out.
“I don’t have specific timelines on it, but what I will tell you is that as soon as they received the report they immediately went to where the student was located, secured the situation and then we began our next steps for communication,” Southerland said. “But at this time, the investigation is ongoing. The student is off campus with the Casper Police Department.”
Southerland said she did not know the type of weapon involved in the incident, the age or grade of the student or when the student was discovered with the weapon.
She said there was not a direct threat made to other students or staff and there were no other students involved.
There also was no lockdown of the school because of the report, Southerland said.
She said the school district will recommend students involved in weapons situations be expelled.
“Student disciplinary consequences, as applicably, will be aligned with our district’s extreme behavior guidelines,” she said. “Additionally, NCSD will encourage criminal charges to be pursued against students who bring weapons to campus.”
CPD spokesperson Amber Freestone said she did not have information on the incident and that if the student is a juvenile, none would be released.
Southerland said the “negative impact of these safety threats on our schools and community is unacceptable.”
“Students bringing weapons to any school campus is prohibited and against the law,” she said. “It is not, and never will be, tolerated by NCSD. Safe and healthy environments are the priority of NCSD.”
A call to the Natrona County School District’s superintendent’s office was not returned by deadline.
