A teen is in custody after a 41-year-old woman was shot in the back of the head in her home Friday, then later died, the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office reports.
The woman was shot at about 12:47 p.m. in a home in the 2300 block of Pine Avenue, just south of Cheyenne city limits, the agency reported Tuesday.
She was transported to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, then life-flighted to UCHealth in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she died from her injuries, said Brandon Warner with the LCSO.
The teen suspect was “taken into custody at the scene,” the sheriff’s office reports. “The investigation remains active, and further details regarding charges or the identity of the involved parties are being withheld at this time due to the age of the suspect and the nature of the case.”
That includes identifying the victim, Warner said, because that also could potentially identify the suspect, and juveniles aren’t publicly identified unless charged as adults.
The woman was alive when emergency responders first got to the home, the report says.
“Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim unconscious but breathing, with a visible gunshot wound to the back of her head,” according to the report.
She was taken for medical attention “immediately,” the LCSO1 report says, adding that, “It is with great sadness that we report the victim has since succumbed to her injuries.”
Warner clarified to Cowboy State Daily that the woman died later that day at UCHealth.
