Yellowstone doesn’t hold a monopoly on idiotic tourists, it just has a committed group of people who document their idiotic activities.
The latest national park to highlight a near-Darwin Award winner is just west of Wyoming in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park.
The unnamed man took a running start and hopped over the fence only to lose his balance and come within inches of plunging 800 feet to the canyon floor.
Spectators were unnerved. One woman screamed before the video, which is posted on the popular Instagram page “Tourons Of Yellowstone,” stopped abruptly.
Officials at Bryce Canyon confirm the individual was not killed and further said they are investigating the incident.
In a statement forwarded to Cowboy State Daily, the National Park Service said they were investigating the incident because not only did the tourist put himself at risk but others hundreds of feet below.
“Considering that this occurred at one of the park’s most popular viewpoints and dislodged rocks onto the heavily trafficked Navajo Loop below, we are extremely thankful that no serious injuries occurred,” spokesman Peter Densmore said.
Deadly Parks
An outdoor data company ranked Bryce Canyon as the 42nd most dangerous national park. The company came up with the ranking system based on numbers of deaths at each park.
According to the data, the most common cause of death at national park is falling.
Yellowstone National Park is ranked 5th while Grand Teton National Park is ranked 9th-deadliest.
