Letter To The Editor: No, The Women Weren't Making Coffee

Ranger station 5 22 26

Dear editor:

I read the article about surviving Mount St. Helen's Volcano eruption and Valerie Pierson's experience when applying for a job at the Crandall Ranger Station.

I spent the summer of 1980, working on a trail crew out of the Sunlight Basin Ranger Station, where my partner and I would go out with a pack horse for 10 days at a time, 4 days off, and clear trails in Sunlight Basin.

I also was around the Crandall Ranger Station, where there were two women who were the trail crew for the trails around the Beartooth Mountain areas.

They would go out on Monday and come back on Fridays, backpacking and carrying their crosscut saw, axes and whatever else they needed.

There was a woman who also worked out of Sunlight and another who worked out of Crandall, I don't remember now their jobs, but it wasn't making coffee.

I also remember Nelda's father when I'd go to Crandall (her comment from May 17, 2026).

Thanks,

Reedy Lash
