One man is dead and a law enforcement official is hospitalized following a shootout Monday evening at a residence in the Saddle Ridge area of Cheyenne.

The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office said a warrant was being served at 7:57 p.m. in the 6900 block of Horse Soldier Road when shots were exchanged between deputies and the suspect.

The suspect was killed in the shootout and a sheriff’s deputy was shot and then taken to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where he is in stable condition.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said it’s believed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

No other details from the sheriff’s office have been released.

Vivid accounts of the incident took place over social media. The Cheyenne and Wyoming News page on Facebook was particularly active.

“I’m 2 blocks away, it’s crazy, cops everywhere, swat teams everywhere,” wrote Dom Gregorio.

Cameron Orum said the shootout happened on his block. “They have multiple swat vehicles around my house,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office page, many residents questioned why a warrant was served on Halloween night when children were still out trick-or-treating.

Others countered by saying any speculation when so few details are known is reckless.

“Please don’t judge too harshly until we have all the facts and not just a small public statement making people aware that the shooter is deceased, and we are safe, and a deputy in the line of duty doing the job he barely makes enough to even risk his life for to keep us safe condition was known,” wrote Leslie Jobe Shelton.
