A civilization reveals its true beliefs not in its constitutions or its creeds, but in its birth rates.
By that measure, the Western world has made its beliefs unmistakably clear. It no longer believes sufficiently in itself to reproduce.
Understanding how we arrived at this point requires an honest accounting of the ideas and the institutions that brought us here.
It began in the courts.
Beginning with Griswold v. Connecticut in 1965 and culminating in Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court constructed a jurisprudence of narcissistic excess — severing the ancient legal and moral connection between human sexuality and human responsibility and constitutionalizing the philosophy that the self is sovereign above all, including the next generation.
The administrative state eagerly followed, spending decades treating the traditional family as merely one lifestyle choice among many. The demographic consequences were entirely predictable and are now undeniable.
The United States birth rate has fallen 23% since 2007 and remains below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.
America's median age has climbed to a record 39.4 years.
The Congressional Budget Office projects that the Social Security trust fund will be insolvent by 2032, triggering automatic benefit cuts of 22% to every American retiree. These are not abstractions.
They are the arithmetic consequences of a civilization that stopped having children.
Here in Wyoming, we are living the consequences in our own backyard. Wyoming now records barely 200 more births than deaths annually.
Our natural population replacement has functionally flatlined.
Any population growth we currently boast of is a mirage — a temporary influx of outsiders while our own youth flee.
Every election cycle, the political class laments this reality and proposes subsidized broadband and tax credits for out-of-state tech conglomerates.
These technocratic tweaks do not create citizens. They do not build communities. They are profoundly unserious responses to a mortal wound.
Nowhere is this civilizational pathology more grotesquely on display than in the modern abortion regime.

The so-called women's movement promised dignity.
What it delivered, in substantial measure, was the hook-up culture — a transactional arrangement that reduces human intimacy to a commodity and leaves both men and women lonelier, more anxious, and less capable of the sustained commitment that a family requires.
Rates of depression and social isolation among young women have risen sharply in the very decades since this liberation was declared complete. Genuine respect for women has not increased in the hook-up culture. It has collapsed.
The young woman who is afraid to have a child because she has been told the planet cannot sustain it, who has been handed a culture that celebrates the termination of pregnancy as an achievement, who has been offered hook-up culture as a substitute for love — that young woman has not been liberated.
She has been robbed of the most profound and irreplaceable experience available to a human being.
Look now at Western Europe and see our future written in the present tense.
In Britain, Sharia courts now operate openly in a parallel legal structure that would have been unimaginable to any previous generation of Englishmen.
In Spain, mass migration has accelerated so dramatically that Sweden's own prime minister publicly warned it risks triggering a continent-wide crisis.
In European households today, there are more pet dogs than children under the age of 15. A civilization that replaces its children with pets and its courts with foreign legal systems has not diversified. It has surrendered.
As G.K. Chesterton observed, the enduring triangle of father, mother, and child is the fundamental cell of society and the ultimate check on the encroaching state.
When that cell is destroyed — by judicial decree, by cultural contempt, by an ideology that treats motherhood as oppression — the entire organism begins to die. We are watching that death in real time, in the demographic data of every Western nation, and in the birth statistics of our own Wyoming communities.
The sky is not falling from too many babies. It is darkening from too few.
This is not a political problem. It is a civilizational emergency. And Wyoming, of all places, has both the sovereign will and the sovereign wealth to lead the West back from the abyss.
That solution deserves its own full accounting, and it will receive one.
