Dear editor:
Rep. Bear recently claimed that "Lander parade-goers—including kids—were handed free condoms by the local LGBT advocacy group." If that happened, there should be evidence.
So let's see it.
Show us the proof.
Where did this information come from? Was it something Representative Bear personally witnessed? Was it reported by law enforcement, parade organizers, or a credible source? Or is it simply a rumor that has now been repeated as fact?
As someone who was on the PFLAG float in the Lander parade, I can state that we did not hand out condoms. We handed out candy to children and celebrated inclusion with the community, just as we have in previous years.
Making inflammatory claims without evidence does nothing to strengthen public discourse. It divides neighbors, damages reputations, and distracts from real issues facing our community.
If Representative Bear has credible evidence to support his accusation, he should make it public. If he does not, he should correct the record. Public officials have a responsibility to ensure that what they share is accurate before presenting it as fact.
Healthy debate is welcome. Honest disagreement is part of democracy. But democracy also depends on truth and accountability. When accusations are made against community organizations or volunteers, they should be backed by facts—not speculation, hearsay, or social media rumors.
Our community deserves better than unfounded accusations. If evidence exists, present it. If it doesn't, stop spreading misinformation.”
