Dear editor:
I must respond to Dale Bohren’s guest column, urging WY citizens to vote NO on Prop. 1.
He gives the familiar reasons for voting no: no resources for education, fire & police departments, lack of road maintenance, etc.
Bohren goes on then to threaten that the state will have to increase the sales tax or even implement a state income tax.
In other words, THE SKY IS FALLING!
Sorry, but I’m not buying it!
Why was Prop 1 even introduced?
My personal opinion is that this Prop was introduced to fix an injustice inflicted upon property owners – having our property taxes doubled (or worse!) during the COVID years, based on ridiculous property valuations.
For example, my property taxes doubled even though no improvements were made to the property.
Similarly, my sister’s property tax more than doubled in one year, even though the property is completely undeveloped.
A neighbor owning the lot next to his saw the property taxes on that lot increase by more than 100%.
But when he put the property on the market for what the county said the property was worth, he got no takers.
When the property finally sold, it went for significantly less than the assessed value. Prop 1 was introduced to try and correct these injustices.
On October 15, 2026, the Fox News internet site had an article, quoting a Truth in Accounting study.
This study concluded that the WY taxpayer surplus (defined as each taxpayer’s share of a state’s surplus) was $30,300 – 3rd highest in the nation!
Let that sink in.
The state surplus is over $30K per WY taxpayer.
Based on this surplus, there is no reason why Prop 1 should not be passed to correct the unjust property assessments foisted upon property owners.
I will certainly be voting for it!
Sincerely,
Bob Dracy, Moorcroft
