Detectives have interviewed multiple people in connection with a Wednesday night gun buy gone bad at a northwest Cheyenne home that left an 18-year-old man dead.
According to witness statements, the man and two friends arrived around 8 p.m. at a residence in the 600 block of Ridgeland Street to buy a firearm from a 16-year-old male, the Cheyenne Police Department reports.
During the encounter, a physical altercation occurred between the man and the 16-year-old that escalated into gunfire, police said.
Federal law prohibits a 16-year-old from selling a firearm to an 18-year-old.
The 16-year-old has not been arrested, said Alexandra Farkas, public information officer for the Cheyenne Police Department.
“Our detectives are working closely with the District Attorney’s Office to review the case and potential charges,” she added.
At The Scene
When he rolled up to the scene, the shooting victim was being treated by emergency responders in the back of an ambulance, said Brett, a local video journalist who operates the FuBar on Patrol social media streams.
Because he posts videos of Cheyenne crime scenes as they happen, Brett declined to give his last name.
“It got pretty crazy. I don’t know exactly what happened, other than somebody got shot and killed,” said Brett, who observed and captured video of the investigation for more than an hour.
That includes seeing “at least seven people” detained, put into police cruisers, and taken away.
He said that corresponding police scanner traffic at the time reported they were detained, but not necessarily suspects.
“Someone was already in a squad car when I got there, then two other (people) showed up, and they immediately handcuffed one, then they had a female they put into a squad car,” Brett said. “I don’t know their involvement.”
In An Ambulance
Brett said he also observed someone in the ambulance being worked on, then the doors of the ambulance were closed.
“I showed up as they were working on someone in the back of the ambulance, then they shut the ambulance doors,” he said. “Then it came over the scanner that they stopped working on that person … and that’s when they called for the coroner.”
Cheyenne police reported that officers remained at the scene throughout the night and have contacted several people of interest in what they report as an “isolated incident” that poses no threat to the public.
Brett’s video from the scene shows at least one person in the back of a patrol car, another male being patted down by officers and handcuffed, and a female also being detained.
He said he doesn’t know if those people were possible persons of interest or witnesses.
