UPDATE: Man Says Casper Cops Shot, Killed Wife In Response To Reported Burglary
Editor’s note: This story has been corrected to reflect Casper police haven’t reported whether the person shot and killed was a suspected burglar or someone else in the home.
Someone was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting during a response to a residential burglary in progress just after midnight Monday, the Casper Police Department reports.
A “subject armed with a firearm” came into contact with officers, according to a statement released by Capt. Jeremy Tremel on the department’s behalf.
The statement doesn’t say whether the person shot and killed during the incident was a suspected burglar or someone else in the home.
At about 36 minutes after midnight Monday, Casper Police Department Officers responded to a report of a residential burglary in progress in the 1600 block of South McKinley Street, the statement says.
"It was reported that an armed individual was inside the residence," the statement says.
Officers arriving encountered "a subject" armed with a firearm, and during the encounter, "shots were fired," the statement adds.
The person was taken to the Wyoming Medical Center for treatment and later pronounced dead, says the statement.
"There is no ongoing threat to the public related to this incident, and no officers were injured," wrote Tremel.
The chief of police has asked the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to investigate the incident, which the statement says is "consistent with Casper Police Department's commitment to transparency," and which is standard practice across Wyoming.
"Pursuant to the established policies of the Casper Police Department, the involved officers have been placed on Administrative Leave," wrote Tremel, adding that the 1600 block of S. McKinley will remain closed to traffic until DCI personnel have completed their investigation at the scene.
