For the second time in less than a month, a wolf that was captured in British Columbia, Canada, and transplanted in Colorado wandered into Wyoming and died here, wildlife officials reported Friday.

Wolf 2513, a male, apparently died in Wyoming on Wednesday, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Game And Fish Returned Wolf Collar

“CPW coordinated with Wyoming Game and Fish for the return of its (the wolf’s) tracking collar; however, Wyoming state law prevents further detail from being shared,” according to a CPW statement released on Friday. “(Wolf) 2513 was part of the group of wolves translocated to Colorado from British Columbia. Wolves are known to travel long distances to find food or mates, including into other states.”

The statement did not say which part of Wyoming the wolf died in, or how it died.

Wyoming Game and Fish officials could not be reached for comment Friday evening.

Second Wolf Dead In Less Than A Month

Another male Colorado wolf was killed in Wyoming on March 15. That wolf was also from the group that was brought into Colorado from British Columbia in January,

That wolf was reported to have been killed by USDA Wildlife Services agents after it killed sheep in north-central Wyoming.

The wolves from British Columbia were the second batch to be brought into Colorado as part of that state’s wolf reintroduction program.

Colorado wolf reintroduction began in late 2023, with the release of wolves brought in from Oregon.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is available.
