The American Coal Council (ACC) extends its congratulations to President Donald J. Trump and Vice President JD Vance on their inauguration as the 47th President and 50th Vice President of the United States.  President Trump’s commitment to achieving American energy independence and his support of the coal industry have never wavered.

President Trump’s leadership in his first term was vital to addressing challenges faced by the coal supply chain, from rolling back overly burdensome regulations to promoting policies that restored coal’s critical role in America’s energy portfolio.

In his inaugural address President Trump reaffirmed – and has never been compromised in his dedication to achieving American energy independence. His declaration of a national energy emergency on his first day back in office highlights his administration’s intent to prioritize domestic energy production. The coal industry, a cornerstone of America’s baseload power, will play an essential role in his vision.

Coal remains the backbone of our energy grid, providing the reliability and affordability necessary to keep America running and prospering. Under President Trump’s leadership, we anticipate policies that will expand domestic production, stabilize energy markets, and secure the nation’s energy future.

By embracing an “all that works energy strategy”, the administration seeks to reduce reliance on foreign energy sources, enhance national security, and drive economic growth. Coal’s abundant supply and critical role in providing stable, on-demand power ensure its place as a cornerstone of this strategy.

During his first term, President Trump’s administration repealed the Clean Power Plan, eased restrictions on coal-fired power plants, and supported job growth in mining and related industries. His second term is expected to build on this legacy through: Streamlined Regulatory Approvals, Investment in Carbon Technologies, and Export Market Development

These initiatives aim to solidify coal’s position as a keystone feature in the American success story Furthermore, they demonstrate the administration’s recognition of coal’s economic and strategic importance.

A Lifeline for Coal Communities

Beyond its contribution to the energy grid, coal is an economic lifeline for countless communities. The administration’s commitment to reversing policies that have disproportionately harmed coal regions is a welcome relief to families who depend on mining for their livelihoods.

Coal mining supports hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, from miners and equipment operators to truck drivers, barge and shipping crews, electric company employees, mining and environmental engineers, workers at coking facilities, steelworkers, electricians, railroad workers, equipment vendors and manufacturers. Additionally, it fuels local economies through tax revenues and infrastructure investments. The Trump administration’s focus on revitalizing these communities includes:

  • Expanding workforce development programs to equip workers with skills for modern mining practices.
  • Investing in infrastructure improvements in coal-producing regions to attract businesses and create new economic opportunities.
  • Offering tax incentives for companies that invest in coal-dependent communities.

Coal is not just an industry; it’s a way of life for millions of Americans. Trump’s policies give hope to communities that have faced economic uncertainty under the previous administration

Efforts to ensure the sustainability of coal communities are vital to preserving their rich cultural heritage and economic contributions.

The Way Forward

While the outlook for coal is promising, challenges remain. The continued push for renewable energy mandates, state-level restrictions on fossil fuels, and the closure of baseload power plants threaten grid reliability. President Trump’s leadership provides an opportunity to address these issues by ensuring an energy mix that works, includes coal, natural gas, nuclear power, and augmenting with renewables when practical

The administration must also navigate increasing global competition in energy markets and the need to modernize America’s aging energy infrastructure. These challenges underscore the importance of fostering a regulatory environment that encourages investment and innovation in the coal sector.

Reliability and resilience must be the guiding principles of America’s energy policy. President Trump’s commitment to these principles is essential to meeting the nation’s growing energy demands. As the nation moves forward under President Trump’s second term, the coal industry is poised for a resurgence. With supportive policies, technological advancements, and a commitment to energy independence, coal will remain a vital part of the nation’s energy strategy.

The ACC envisions a future where coal continues to provide economic stability, energy reliability, and environmental innovation. By working closely with the administration, industry leaders, and communities, we can achieve these goals and secure a prosperous future for coal.
