A body believed to be that of a 58-year-old elite endurance athlete and Cheyenne resident James “Dingo” Dominguez was found Wednesday, authorities report.

He's presumed to have drowned in July when a specialized rowboat he was in capsized during a major storm on Flathead Lake near Polson, Montana.

The discovery ends a grueling two months for the family, his identical twin brother Jerry “MAP” Dominguez told Cowboy State Daily on Thursday.

Jerry Dominguez said he is still in shock over the death of his brother, who remarried just two weeks before he went missing and has a daughter from his first marriage.
“I miss talking to him,” he said.

Not only were they brothers, they were twins and shared an incredibly close bond, Jerry Dominguez explained in a GoFundMe post to help fund more rescue time.

"I know James/Dingo meant so much to so many of you,” he wrote. “But for me, he's my other half — MAP & Dingo. We've always had each other's backs. I know without a doubt that he would do the same for me.

"I can’t and won’t leave him out there. This isn’t just about me, it’s for all of us who love him — especially our mom. I’m doing everything I can to find him and bring him home."

Dominguez was a team member of OARward Bound, a Cheyenne organization dedicated to rowing 16,000 miles across three oceans for charity, scheduled to start in November and concluding in 2027.

Dominguez and OARward Bound teammates Jayme Linker and Neil Lomas were training on Flathead Lake on the evening of July 14 in preparation for the first leg of the journey, which would cover a portion of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, his brother said.

The trio was aware that a storm was brewing, but were confident they had enough time to complete the training before it arrived, said Jerry Dominguez.

“The storm came in faster than they anticipated,” he added.

After the boat capsized, Linker and Lomas were pulled from the water by a passerby around 9 a.m. on July 15, but James Dominguez was nowhere to be found.

High Winds

Dominguez was found in an area north of Matterhorn Point, capping an intense two-month search operation involving numerous volunteers and law enforcement agencies.

The body was recovered by Idaho-based Ralston Underwater Search and Recovery and was transported to the Montana Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, Lake County Sheriff Donald R. Bell said in a statement.

On the morning of July 15, Lake County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue responded to the report of a capsized boat near the end of Rocky Point on Flathead Lake.

Two people in the rowboat were helped by other boaters and taken to shore, where they were transported by ambulance with hypothermia, while Dominguez was reported missing.

Initially, high winds and rough water precluded the use of boats in the search for Dominguez, Bell said.

A New Challenge

James Dominguez was a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Army National Guard, and Navy Reserve — including deployments to Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He also worked for 15 years as a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, according to OARward Bound.

After retiring, he sought new challenges, discovering obstacle course racing, a sport that demands physical stamina and mental fortitude.

James Dominguez excelled in intense endurance competitions, including the Spartan Ultra World Championships, a grueling endurance obstacle course race encompassing 60 challenging obstacles held in high-altitude locations.

As a Spartan Race Krypteia, James Dominguez guided others through tough physical and mental obstacles, “embodying leadership through action and discipline,” said OARward Bound.

There have been two other drownings at Flathead Lake this summer, and on average there is at least one a year, said Lake County Undersheriff Ben Woods.
