Guest Column: Nuclear Is A Devil That Must Be Exorcised From The State

Campbell County Commissioner Scott Clem writes, "[With nuclear], we won't have any hunting or fishing, everyone will get cancer, our hospitals will be overwhelmed, our pets' heads will fall off, and our babies will start to be born with a third eyeball that's blind."

Nuclear is a devil that must be exorcised from our state. We are a democracy where the majority rules.

Without controversy, the majority is clearly identified by what is seen on Facebook and those who are the loudest.

Our state and local government officials must block any private land sales and stop these nuclear companies from coming to our state.

The people have spoken! If land was already purchased by nuclear companies, government must not issue any permits, and force them to leave or face financial ruin.

We don't want nuclear, and it is befuddling to think why our state and local governments conspired to bring these companies here to begin with. They are always plotting against us.

The legislature should build more coal and natural gas plants, and bring in businesses we want, like Costco and The Cheesecake Factory.

The government should stop bringing in all these Mexican restaurants too. We've got too many, but I digress.

Our state legislature should ban all nuclear activity and waste. These reactors and places that handle uranium can blow up like an atomic bomb, like at Fukushima and Three Mile Island. Nobody wants barrels of leaking glowing green ooze.

There are mountains of this stuff in other states. They're all talking about bringing their waste to Wyoming because they're running out of room, and the bodies are piling up from people who have died.

They're all talking about making Wyoming a nuclear wasteland, and want to force us to move away from our homes and into tiny apartments in their cities to pay their high taxes.

The NRC doesn't regulate the nuclear industry enough. In fact, President Trump said in an executive order that he wants to reform the NRC so that they regulate more. Bravo, Mr. President!

Nuclear power plants and these companies put the waste outside without any safeguards where curious animals and kids can get into it. It's why in other places it's leaking into the ground and air.

The technology and regulations haven't improved since the 1970s. These companies don't take care of the waste or monitor it with technology and other tools.

Until we have the technology to eliminate all danger, it's way too risky because we don't have the engineering or technological know-how to contain, monitor, or recycle these materials to keep people safe and the environment clean.

People like David Ruzic, Professor of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois, claim that after 500 years, the fission products of nuclear waste become as radioactive as natural uranium ore that’s uncontained in the ground. He's a liar!

We all know that natural uranium ore isn't radioactive, and that nuclear waste can't be safely handled.

We also know that no other industry produces dangerous waste that can harm or kill people. If the government doesn't protect us by stopping private industry development, people will die. Full stop.

If companies like Radiant are allowed to build a private business on private land, then all of our worst fears will come true.

We won't have any hunting or fishing, everyone will get cancer, our hospitals will be overwhelmed, we won't have enough medical beds and ventilators, our pets' heads will fall off, and our babies will start to be born with a third eyeball that's blind.

Everybody agrees, and there are lots of studies you can find on the internet to back this up.

State and local government: do your job and stop these companies! Literally no one wants them here.

Yes, we want economic diversification, but we don't want nuclear, more Mexican restaurants, dangerous factories, data centers, or any companies looking to move here from California or any other state.

Diversify the economy the way we want. We need more companies like TJ Maxx, JCPenney, and Chick-fil-A.

Our governor and state legislature need to quit messing around and create more businesses and jobs with all that property tax money they keep hoarding; jobs that are safe, high-paying, and that don't bother anyone.

(In case it wasn't clear, this piece is facetious; a literary caricature. Just about every part of this is wrong or backwards.)
