One person is dead following a Friday afternoon shooting in Pinedale, and self-defense is being investigated as a possible factor, authorities say.

The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office reported that it responded to a 1 p.m. shooting Friday in Pinedale between Tyler and Maybell Avenue.

One person is “confirmed deceased,” the sheriff’s office said in a Friday statement, adding that there is no danger to the public.

Sublette County Sheriff KC Lehr told Cowboy State Daily in a later interview that the shooting happened in an alley behind a restaurant, in a busy part of town but the area was not otherwise crowded.

Self-defense is being investigated as a possible factor, said Lehr, adding that investigators have questioned the shooter. Law enforcement personnel are also talking with witnesses and continuing other portions of this active investigation, he said.

Besides the fatality, no one else was injured.

“This remains an active investigation, and no further information is available at this time,” says the sheriff’s office statement.

Pinedale is a busy place this weekend, as a rendezvous-style festival has booked events almost hourly Thursday through Sunday.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story relied on an inaccurate report by Sublette County Emergency Management, which claimed one person was in custody. That is not correct, Sublette County authorities have since told Cowboy State Daily.
