One year ago today, President Donald Trump took office with a clear mandate: restore common sense to Washington, secure our borders, unleash American energy, and end the failed policies of the past administration. As we mark this first anniversary, I'm proud to report that President Trump has kept his promises—and Wyoming is better off because of it.
On immigration, the difference couldn't be starker.
The Biden administration's border catastrophe wasn't incompetence; it was intentional sabotage. Biden systematically dismantled every protection we had, flinging open the border, and flooding our communities with over 7 million criminal illegal aliens. On the campaign trail, President Trump promised that he would put an end to this madness.
In record time, he has secured our border, reimposed law and order, and launched the essential mission of deporting those who should not be here in our country. The first bill the Senate passed, and President Trump signed into law was the Laken Riley Act, named for an innocent young American woman brutally murdered by a criminal illegal alien Biden refused to deport. This legislation guarantees these criminals get thrown out fast. This is what America First looks like.
I was also so proud to see President Trump take a chainsaw to reckless foreign aid spending. For decades, USAID has shipped billions of our hard-earned tax dollars overseas while American families struggled to pay their bills. The Biden administration cared more about bankrolling corrupt foreign regimes and woke NGOs than helping struggling Americans. Consider how they wasted our money: millions fighting "disinformation" in Kazakhstan, millions for a Sesame Street show in Iraq, millions to push green transportation in Georgia, the country. The list could sadly go on and on.
The president ended this scam and is ensuring that our tax dollars work for Americans.
The administration has also taken a clear stand against the left's war on women. President Trump's first executive order was protecting women's and girls' sports from biological males. It was a long-overdue rejection of radical gender ideology. Our daughters and granddaughters deserve to compete on a level playing field. In Wyoming, where we still believe in biology and common sense, this decision was met with overwhelming support.
For Wyoming's economy, this year has been the exact opposite of the last 4 years.
President Trump understands what the climate extremists in the Democrat Party refuse to acknowledge: American energy dominance is an economic imperative and a national security necessity.
The Trump administration has worked to revitalize our coal industry after Biden tried to kill it, has removed the Biden-era regulatory stranglehold on oil and gas production, and is making it easier to develop uranium and expand nuclear energy. These aren't just policy victories; they are lifelines for Wyoming families and communities that Democrats wanted to destroy in service of their Green New Deal fantasy.
Personally, I was very proud to work with President Trump, Senator Barrasso, and Representative Hageman in passing my legislation undoing the Biden administration’s ridiculous Buffalo Resource Management Plan Amendment. The Biden Buffalo RMPA was aimed at completely ending future coal mining in the Powder River Basin and would’ve devastated Wyoming’s economy. It was a blatant attack on the multiple use of our federal lands, and I am glad that it is now completely dead.
After four years of having a president who wanted to hurt Wyoming livelihoods and kill legacy industries, it’s amazing to have a leader who wants to protect American industries and jobs.
And the results speak for themselves.
Gas prices for Wyoming families continue to drop, putting real money back in people's pockets after Biden drove them to record highs. Lower energy costs don't just help at the pump; they ripple through our entire economy, keeping inflation in check and eventually reducing costs for consumers.
The American people didn't vote for more of the same failed policies in 2024. We didn't vote for open borders, economic decline, and cultural surrender. We voted for a president and a team that would reassert America's position in the world and end the Biden administration's catastrophic obsession with woke policies that divided us, weakened our military, and embarrassed us on the world stage.
President Trump has accomplished more in one year than President Biden did in four years of failure. More importantly, he's kept his word to the American people, something that's become extinct in modern politics.
The first year of this administration has been phenomenal for Wyoming. Our energy workers have their jobs and respect back. Our families are safer, more prosperous, and no longer told to apologize for being American. Our values are being defended rather than attacked.
Wyoming knows what works. America First works. I can’t wait to see what gets done in year two, three, and four of this historical administration.
Cynthia Lummis was sworn into the United States Senate on January 3, 2021, becoming the first woman to serve as United States Senator from Wyoming.
