Dear editor:
Right now, a handful of Wyoming legislators and public officials are pushing an anti-nuclear narrative under the guise of safety.
As my friends and associates know, I refuse to tiptoe around this topic so here’s the reality: In Wyoming, you can’t be anti-nuclear without being anti-uranium.
Our state produces the uranium that powers America’s reactors. Attacking the nuclear energy industry is the same as attacking uranium, Wyoming’s original legacy mineral, along with the workers and communities who mine it.
I’ve proudly worked my whole career in uranium and nuclear energy, holding leadership roles in both public companies and industry advocacy groups.
If you think you can support uranium mining but not nuclear, then you’re supporting a resource without a market.
The U.S. nuclear energy industry is one of the safest, most heavily regulated industries in the world.
Pretending otherwise doesn’t make us safer; it just makes us poorer. Wyoming should not be turning our backs on this golden opportunity.
Nuclear will bring jobs, investment, and stability to our economy.
If we ignore the truth and believe the misinformation, the Cowboy State will be left at a permanent economic disadvantage.
Other growing industries, not just the nuclear industry, will see how the door was closed to one industry, and they will avoid coming to our State.
Wyoming will have a hard time recovering from that.
Uranium mining and nuclear power are the future. It has long been the safest and cleanest way to generate electricity to power America.
Wake up, Wyoming, before it’s too late.
Sincerely,
Wayne Heili, Casper
