A person fatally shot Tuesday morning in Fort Collins, Colorado, was an airman serving in Cheyenne, the F.E. Warren Air Force Base confirmed to Cowboy State Daily.

This marks at least the fourth shooting incident involving either injury or death and local airmen in about six months.

In March, local Air Force members shooting targets in Platte County shot and injured a Verizon cell tower worker. Platte County Sheriff David Russell told Cowboy State Daily in August his office was still waiting for ballistics data pertaining to that case.

A Wyoming-based airman was shot and killed July 20 in an event that initially cast scrutiny on the Sig Sauer M18 pistol, but later prompted the arrest of another airman on suspicion of manslaughter.

And in August, both the suspected shooter and decedent in an alleged manslaughter were identified as local airmen in a case ongoing in Laramie County District Court.

Early Tuesday

Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) at 2:22 a.m. Tuesday received a report of a shooting in the 100 block of West Fairway Lane, the agency said in a statement.

Police found one person dead and arranged for a second person to be taken to an area hospital.

The decedent was an airman, and the second person was not, 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs Officer Lt. Raegan Lockhart told Cowboy State Daily on Thursday.

Detectives in the FCPS Crimes Against Persons Unit are investigating the incident and have determined all people involved knew each other.

“There is no indication of any ongoing threat to the public,” says the statement.

“This is a tragic situation, and our deepest condolences go to the families and friends of those affected,” added FCPS Assistant Chief Frank Barrett in the statement.

Lockhart on Thursday declined to release the airman’s name, saying the 24 hour post-next-of-kin-notification period hadn’t elapsed.

“This is a heartbreaking day for the 90th Missile Wing, our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of those affected,” said Col. Terry Holmes, 90th Missile Wing commander, in the base's Wednesday statement on the shooting. “Our focus is on supporting our Airmen while fully cooperating with local authorities and OSI as they continue their investigation.”
