Dear editor:

With everything leading up to the election in November, the biggest thing on the ballot is democracy itself. It isn’t just people on the left who feel this way.

With all the anti-democratic dogma coming from the Trump camp, it becomes a very real concern that, to stay in power, they may end up eroding democracy.

Because of this, I and some other people are attempting to organize a march in Cheyenne, WY, which will hopefully take place in late September, and will display a shared endeavor to protect our democratic values.

Our plan is to invite a Native American color-guard to lead the march, followed by some of us in Revolutionary War cosplay, and marching to the fife and drum, while singing a revised version of “The Liberty Tree,” from Disney’s “Johnny Tremaine.”

The intent is to use the imagery ironically, admitting that the first generation was not as inclusive as it could have been, but that does not make it devoid of value, nor does that mean that we can’t strive for a more inclusive world now.

And patriotic imagery can once again be universal.

After that, both the rank and file of the march, as well as people possibly wearing Union Army and WWII uniforms, can follow. It has also been suggested that multiple flags from our country’s history, as well as the flags of the states and territories, can be flown.

The plan is to invite multiple groups and individuals of every gender, ethnicity, and orientation, many from the left, but also those conservatives and old-school RINOs who want to participate.

The bottom line is our shared love of democracy, and the need to preserve it.

Anyone appearing in cosplay can also change the uniforms and flags to show who they represent.

More updates and announcements will follow as we get organized, and I hope to see as many people as possible gathered to show that the shared dream is not over.

Sincerely,

Connor Thompson
