The Crook County Sheriff’s Office and other first responder agencies investigated a potential hazardous materials threat at the county courthouse in Sundance on Friday night, and the FBI is now involved, authorities say.
The investigation began with a chemical hazard investigation about 5 p.m. Friday. Ed Robinson, Crook County Emergency Management coordinator, told Cowboy State Daily on Saturday that the threat stemmed from a local courthouse; he also told the outlet of the FBI's involvement.
Campbell County Fire Department and Regional Response Team 1 were on scene at the request of the Crook County Sheriff’s Office until 7:45 that evening, according to the fire department’s call log.
It was the most recent of at least three similar incidents reported across the state this week: a suspicious chemical presence prompted authorities to evacuate the Campbell County Courthouse in Gillette Tuesday; a suspicious package emptied the Casper Justice Center on Thursday.
FBI Denver Field Office spokeswoman Vikki Migoya confirmed to Cowboy State Daily that the FBI is involved in the investigation of the Gillette incident.
Robinson referred Cowboy State Daily to the FBI for additional details. The FBI has not responded for comment.
The Crook County Sheriff’s Office did not respond immediately to Saturday voicemails requesting comment. Campell County Fire Chief Jeff Bender deferred to Robinson.
It remains unclear whether the incidents are related.
