Letter To The Editor: Nuclear Family Is Convenient Construct

Dear editor: The term nuclear family, first coined in the 1920’s, is a convenient construct. One designed to exclude and marginalize those who pursue their dreams, loves and lives in ways that don’t fit its definition.

Dear editor -

I am writing today in reference to a Cowboy State Daily story dated October 3, 2023 entitled ‘Casper Legislator Blasts Pride Fest Support, Says LGBTQ Families Unnatural’.

Health Care, and access to it, is a fundamental human right. Wyoming, the Equality State, and its leaders must ensure that right for everyone - gay or straight, rich or poor, white, brown, red or yellow.

WY legislators who complain that entities receiving public funds should not go where people are and share with them information about health care and its availability fall far short of their obligation to their constituents. I am proud to know that Enroll Wyoming is out there doing the work to help us all help one another.

Here is my belief. The term nuclear family, first coined in the 1920’s, is a convenient construct. One designed to exclude and marginalize those who pursue their dreams, loves and lives in ways that don’t fit its definition. We are all part of God’s family, we are all God’s children - yes, that is my belief. God is everywhere, and we need to go everywhere to help everyone live healthy lives, full of love and grace.

Sincerely,

Michael Von Flatern. Gillette, WY

Von Flatern served as a state senator in Wyoming from 2005 to 2021
