The good news is the temperatures are not going to hit -460 degrees like a faulty bank sign in Montana showed a few years ago. But still, it’s not a good time to go camping in Wyoming.

Wyoming is about to be body-slammed by Mother Nature with an arctic front that will bring temperatures in some areas of the state down to 40 degrees below zero and wind chills reaching 60 degrees below zero.

Cowboy State Daily meteorologist Don Day says the cold front that will start affecting Wyoming on Wednesday will be felt all over the state, but the coldest temperatures will be in Yellowstone National Park, the Big Horn Basin and central Wyoming. The western areas of the state will stay the warmest, he said.

What About Big Piney?

Big Piney, Wyoming, which battles two other communities for the title “Ice Box of the Nation,” will get cold but won’t be the coldest.

The expected low temperature for the Sublette County town is -25 on Wednesday night.

The Coldest Community

As for other communities in the state, as of Monday, Worland is the champion for the coldest predicted low with -35 degrees forecast for Thursday night.

That doesn’t mean Day’s prediction of -40 won’t happen. It’s just that the town in Wyoming with the chilliest forecast is Worland.
