By 4:30 a.m., I was on the road with Rhonda and Levon—my two companion dogs—driving into the dark. Two hours of silence, chasing the hope of sunrise over the South Wind River Range.

We were heading east on Highway 130 to look for moose this morning. Suddenly the pink in the sky changed into a flaming orange and yellow.
