Today's question to Don Day

Austin Moon
Has Wyoming’s cloud seeding efforts made a significant impact on increasing snowpack?
Don Day
The effectiveness of cloud seeding efforts is a subject of debate among scientists. There has been considerable research and money effort put forth to try to measure it's effectiveness or lack thereof. To determine whether or not cloud seeding might increase snowpack rigorous scientific studies must be performed. Research of cloud seeding is difficult because separating the natural amount of snowfall and what amount was actually produced through cloud seeding is hard to quantify. I suggest reading about this study SNOWIE (Seeded and Natural Orographic Wintertime Clouds -- the Idaho Experiment). This study went about trying to quantify the potential increased snowfall in cloud seeding operations in the west: https://www.uwyo.edu/news/2020/02/uw-researchers-contribute-to-follow-up-study-of-first-quantifiable-observation-of-cloud-seeding.html
