History and mystery are two of my favorite things.

Who doesn’t love a cool mystery especially when it involves an airplane?

So, when I received an email about a wooden propeller found in the middle of nowhere and gifted to a woman and her husband in return for their kindness, I was intrigued.

She had sent me an email in response to a story I had written about an airmail pilot in 1923 who lost his propeller mid-flight in southern Wyoming and somehow managed to land his plane without it.

This propeller was found in a different area of the state, but how did it get there and what kind of plane did it belong to?

It took a lot of digging, and some conversation with experts, but the resulting story was at the top of my favorites for the year.
