Carbon County and other first responders were on the scene of a fatal collision involving an ATV and a commercial truck Thursday afternoon on Forest Road 443 near Encampment.

Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken confirmed that a person had died. A preliminary report indicates that the ATV came around the corner at a high rate of speed, Bakken said.

The truck was a commercial vehicle belonging to a third-party contractor working for the Saratoga Sawmill, Bakken said. Information on the ATV or its operator was not available.

Officials with the Wyoming Highway Patrol told Cowboy State Daily that troopers were responding to assist the Carbon County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's officials have alerted the U.S. Forest Service's district ranger of the crash, Bakken said.

An attendant at the Saratoga-based Ranger office said she did not have information on the collision, and that the ranger in charge had gone home sick for the day. Scanner traffic also indicated that a first responder had attempted CPR, but a male had died.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is availalbe.
