Dear editor:

President Trump and company have been very busy.

Of all actions taken, there has been limited opportunity for effective individual response.

An exception is the recent congressional vote to “claw back” $9 billion in previously obligated funds. $1 billion of those dollars were intended for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, of which about $1 million would have helped fund Wyoming PBS through 2027.

The key term in the above is “previously obligated.” What Republicans have done here is renege on a promise.

When I grew up, reneging on a deal was akin to lying or cheating and simply unacceptable. Even the Cowboy Code of the West includes the value: “When you make a promise, keep it.”

I mentioned an effective individual response. We have one available to us for Wyoming PBS.

The PBS app and over-the-air broadcasts provide free access to many PBS shows. An upgrade to that app, PBS Passport, offers much more availability of quality programming.

Included are many Wyoming-centric programs. NO – they are not all leftist propaganda.

Rep. Lloyd Larsen (R-Lander), quoted in a Washington Post article on July 19, said “The content derided by some Republican members of Congress as overly liberal does not dominate on the broadcasts in Wyoming, the nation’s reddest state.”

Also notable, PBS programming is mostly commercial free.

The minimum donation to Wyoming PBS for Passport access is only $5.00 a month. (Larger amounts are appreciated.)

I believe this is about the best streaming value available anywhere today.

According to Judd Rogers of Wyoming PBS, there are about 3,200 Wyoming PBS Passport subscribers today.

We can do much better in numbers, support a valuable local service and tell our elected representatives that reneging on a deal is not acceptable to our way of life.

Sincerely,

Thom Harris, Cheyenne
