A child was shot in a vehicle parked outside a gas station in Cody Tuesday afternoon, police say.
Cody Police Department officers received a call at about 12:51 p.m. reporting a child had been shot in the abdomen, Lt. Juston Wead told Cowboy State Daily.
The shooting happened at the KT Sinclair gas station on Sheridan Avenue, according to a statement the department released Tuesday afternoon.
Whether the injury was to the child’s abdomen remains unconfirmed, Wead said.
He declined to release the child’s age or sex.
The investigation is ongoing, but initial information indicates the injury originated from “a negligent discharge of a firearm involving two juveniles,” police said in the statement.
The injured child was one of the two juveniles involved, Wead confirmed.
The shooting victim was being treated at Cody Regional Health. Wead declined to disclose the child’s condition.
There is no ongoing threat to the community, and the incident appears to be isolated, the department’s statement adds.
Wead said the origin of the gun, its caliber, and the statements of witnesses are not yet releasable as the investigation remains ongoing.
“We’re still gathering information and working towards finding out what exactly occurred,” said Wead.
