Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were working in Riverton late Friday when a vehicle passed them going 80 mph in the 30-mph zone of the town’s busiest road.
The driver sped northbound on Federal Boulevard, and law enforcement chased him, WHP announced in a Monday statement.
The vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic as it bolted north onto State Highway 789, which is currently a construction zone with just two lanes instead of its usual layout of four lanes and a turning lane. The driver surpassed 130 mph during the chase, which headed toward the town of Shoshoni.
Troopers conducted a tactical vehicle intervention, and the car fled the road to the right, rolling several times before coming to rest on its wheels, says the statement.
The driver, a 22-year-old Riverton man who wasn't identified in the WHP report, was “unrestrained” and suffered minor injuries, the statement says. He was soon released from the hospital and arrested for DUI and felony eluding.
“If you were one of the vehicles forced off the road by this driver, please reach out via (Facebook) Messenger,” says the statement, adding gratitude to the Shoshoni Police Department and Fremont County Sheriff’s Office for helping.
