A Gillette woman last seen two months ago after mysteriously disappearing from a trailer home in Gillette was located safe in Colorado on Thursday.

The Gillette Police Department confirmed Friday that Kelsey Johnson, 32, is no longer considered missing, said Deputy Chief Brent Wasson.

Johnson reported in person to the Denver Police Department on Thursday evening to say she is safe, said Stacy Koester, a volunteer private investigator and executive director of the nonprofit WyoFind. She learned the news from Johnson’s father, Stephen Burris.

Details surrounding Johnson’s disappearance are not being disclosed to protect her privacy.

Despite her no longer being considered missing, her family and friends have lingering questions and still fear for her safety.

Her father is not convinced that Johnson is safe because she has yet to contact her family.

“Just none of it makes any sense,” Burris told Cowboy State Daily. “I don’t think I will be sure until I see her for myself.”

Nonetheless, he thanked Koester, the police and his community of friends for all their time, effort and prayers in helping to find her.

Traced To Colorado

Johnson was reported missing May 6 by her family after a friend had reported Johnson had left with a man in an older model pickup from her friend’s trailer home in Gillette on April 14.

Johnson was traced to Colorado after she reportedly texted a friend April 23 asking to borrow money for a place to stay.

Her family and friends said it was unlike her to leave without contacting any of them to let her know where she had gone.

Koester praised the police’s work on the case and further said she hopes that Johnson knows how much she’s missed.

“I truly hope that knowing everyone’s care and concern for Kelsey will encourage her to come home to her family and friends who have been worried about her,” Koester said. “We will continue to stay in contact and provide support to the family as we do in every case.”
