U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman is condemning California Gov. Gavin Newsom for not giving a stronger response to the ongoing immigration riots in Los Angeles.
The Wyoming Republican told host John McArdle on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” on Tuesday that everything Newsom has done in his response to the ongoing violence isn’t just wrong, it’s borderline criminal.
“I think Gavin Newsom, pretty much every decision he makes is the wrong one,” Hageman said. “I think that’s how you know what is the right decision to make is to do the opposite of what he does.
“Again, it is stunning to me that he would take the side of the rioters over the side of law and order.”
President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles to quell a series of anti-immigration riots taking place there.
The presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in and around the politically deep-blue city touched off the riots.
Newsom fired back against the deployment by suing the Trump administration, leading the president to publicly call for Newsom’s arrest.
Hageman addressed the ongoing feud Tuesday and agreed Newsom is to blame.
She also predicted Newsom’s lawsuit against the Trump administration would fail but stopped short of siding with Trump in calling for the governor’s arrest.
“I’m not going to go that far,” she said. “I don’t think that’s what is necessary, but I think that it is incredibly important that we restore law and order, and I think we saw more of that last night.
“We cannot allow the anarchists to take control of this country, we just can’t.”
Mixed Messages
Hageman also pointed out that some of the violent protesters are sending mixed messages.
“It really is surprising to me that we have people who waving flags from a foreign country and burning ones (from) here while they’re claiming that they don’t want to be deported to the country that they’re waving the flags of,” she said. “Yet, they claim to hate America.
“None of this makes sense and it tells you that this is not an organic movement, but this is just part of the ongoing effort to undermine America.”
Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyoming, also spoke out against the Los Angeles riots.
“The LA riots are not ‘peaceful,’” she posted to her X account. “They are lawless. They are violent. They are anti-American. Deport all criminal illegal aliens who hate our country.”
Lummis also called out Newsom, writing in a separate post that “the violence, rioting and destruction that Gov. Newsom is allowing to take place in LA can’t continue.”
