Dear editor:

Some may be surprised to learn that there are more sex chromosome combinations than just XY and XX.

A person can have just one sex chromosome, while others can have three or more.

Additionally, individuals can be born with XY and still be recognizable as biological women if they have androgen insensitivity.

The idea that sex is binary is not supported by science, as there are many common sex chromosomal variations that don't exactly match a binary.

These variations can include intersex traits of all kinds, and a diverse mixture of environmental and inborn factors shape sex development across a spectrum.

Sincerely,

Andrew Carson, Teton County
