Letter to the Editor: Don't Let Insurance Companies Get Your DNA

Dear editor: I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I do know insurance companies and how they’d LOVE to get their hands on your data so that they could deny coverage for “pre-existing conditions.”

The article “Wyomingites Who Gave DNA To 23andMe Left In Limbo With Company’s Bankruptcy“ highlights the most worrisome aspect of voluntary genetic testing: What happens if your data falls into the wrong hands?

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I do know insurance companies and how they’d LOVE to get their hands on your data so that they could deny coverage for “pre-existing conditions.”

There are no laws against them doing this through genetic testing, and Congress has been historically very slow in responding to such issues. They often don’t respond until it reaches a crisis level.

In case you can’t tell, I don’t have any love for insurance companies, because I’ve had too many relatives and friends who were denied for crazy reasons. Genetic testing data would only give them more ammo to use in their denials.
