Dear editor:

I attended Congresswoman Harriet Hageman’s town hall meeting in Laramie Wednesday night (March 19), and I was disgusted by both the obscenities shouted at her and by her flippant and deliberately provocative responses to some of the questions.

Hageman did in fact walk into a hornet’s nest, as Cowboy State Daily’s story said, and some in the crowd were shamefully rude. But some of her answers were blatant attempts to goad the audience — as when she claimed with obvious sarcasm that she didn’t even know what transsexual rights mean.

I can’t and won’t defend the worst behaviors I saw in the audience. Nor can Hageman defend her condescension and arrogance. Whether she likes it or not, these people are her constituents, and those who asked sincere questions deserved better.

Dan Elliott, Laramie
