Dear editor:
I served as a paratrooper at Fort Bragg, which was originally named for a traitorous Confederate general, some years ago.
In 2021, in accordance with congressional legislation that mandated renaming such military installations, the name was changed to Fort Liberty.
Today, at Pete Hegseth’s initiative, it was changed back to Fort Bragg.
As a veteran currently receiving excellent healthcare at the VA and concerned about planned cuts to the VA ostensibly intended to save money, I deplore the money that is being wasted on this pointless name change.
The cost of this change will be in excess of $6 million dollars in federal funds, not to mention the cost to the State of North Carolina of almost $300K to change state highway signage again.
Perhaps the administration that is currently planning to fire 80,000 employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs could instead have used that money to retain some of those employees who provide vital healthcare and support services to veterans.
Talk about waste, fraud, and abuse.
Sincerely,
Alyce J. Vaughn, Cody
