Dear editor:

After reading the letter to the editor last week about gun free zones, I felt the need to respond.

As a retired law enforcement officer and former active killer preparedness instructor, I studied active killer incidents, trained for a law enforcement response that would enable officers working for me to best handle such a situation, and taught active killer preparedness classes.

Dr. John Lott, founder of the Crime Prevention Resource Center is highly respected for his work and his statistics are as close to factual as any available.

Those who study mass killings, concur with Dr. Lott, stating the vast majority take place in “gun free zones.”

The killer in the Aurora theatre admitted choosing that one as it was designated a gun free zone. Several other theatres were in the area that were not.

One of the best presentations I attended was by Ed Monk. Ed is retired military, a former teacher and has studied mass killings for nearly 30 years.

I encourage anyone interested to watch the presentation then make up your mind about “gun free zones.”

This is especially important for policy makers such as school board members, business owners, or anyone else making decisions that could potentially affect the lives of those present if an active killing takes place in an area, they’re responsible for.

Criminals do not obey laws, including signs that say, “gun free zone.” Watch Ed's presentation, and then you decide.
