Navy Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Bourque was relieved of his duties this week as the commanding officer of the Navy Reserve Center in Cheyenne “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command,” the U.S. Navy says in a statement.
Bourque, the Navy said, did not meet expectations required of military leaders.
“The Navy maintains the highest standards for commanding officers and holds them accountable when those standards are not met,” the Navy said.
No other details were released.
Bourque took command of the Navy Resource Center (NRC) Cheyenne in December 2023. NRC Cheyenne is part of the Navy Reserve Region Readiness and Mobilization Command Everett based in Everett, Washington.
Capt. Christopher Peppel, head of the Washington-based command, temporarily replaced Bourque with Lt. Cmdr. Margaret Nichols, who was assigned to Cheyenne.
Bourque was temporarily reassigned to Navy Reserve Forces Command, the Navy said.
Reserve Centers’ Duties
The Navy Reserves operates six regional headquarters and 122 Navy Reserve Centers (NRCs), including the one in Cheyenne. They are located in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Guam.
The centers provide administrative, training and readiness support to Navy Reserve sailors, “ensuring the Navy Reserve remains warfighting ready, anytime, anywhere,” according to the military.
NRC Cheyenne’s active-duty Training and Administration of the Reserves staff trains and manages about 65 selected Navy Reserve sailors.
A message left with a spokesman for the Navy Reserves was not returned immediately Thursday.
