Dear editor:

I was deeply disappointed to read that Senator John Barrasso has expressed support for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. As a Wyoming physician and former State Health Officer, I find it troubling that Senator Barrasso would back an individual who is known for his vocal opposition to vaccines.

In a recent political ad, Dr. Barrasso proudly claims to be “Wyoming’s Doctor.” If he truly holds that title, why would he support someone like RFK Jr., who has consistently spread misinformation about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines? Vaccines are one of the most cost-effective, safe, and essential tools we have to protect the public from preventable diseases. The stakes are too high to endorse someone who could potentially undermine our entire vaccination program.

Senator Barrasso argues that the FDA needs a “much-needed shakeup,” but what he fails to acknowledge is the real harm that RFK Jr. could do to public health. RFK Jr.’s anti-vaccine stance is a threat to the very foundation of our national health initiatives. It’s crucial that our leaders prioritize evidence-based medicine over political calculations, especially when the health of our citizens is at risk.

Senator Barrasso needs to set aside political concerns and consider what is truly in the best interest of Wyoming and the nation. Supporting RFK Jr. would be a serious detriment to the future of public health.

Sincerely,

Brent D. Sherard, MD, MPH

Former Director, Wyoming Department of Health and State Health Officer
