A truck plowed into a Maverik gas station in Rock Springs on Thursday, knocking over two South Dakota patrons who were trying to pay for some tea at the counter, according to a police statement and the victim’s public social media post.

Jim and Kathy Sigle were driving through Wyoming when they stopped at the gas station, Kathy Sigle said Thursday in a public post to her Facebook page.

Just as Sigle handed her credit card to the salesperson, she heard a loud crash. A pickup truck drove through the glass doors and toward her. Her husband was about 4 feet to her right, she wrote.

The pickup rammed the counter’s corner, shoving the countertop into the couple and pushing them backward, wrote Kathy. Jim Sigle fell on his elbow and backside and slid. A food shelf was then wedged between the two of them.

Kathy’s head hit the floor as debris buried her, she wrote.

“It all happened so fast but my biggest fear was the pickup driving over me,” wrote Kathy Sigle. “It stopped about 10 (feet) from me and was headed right for me.”

Next she knew, her husband was calling her name and pulling the countertop and debris off her, she wrote.

“I was pretty shaken, had blood dripping down my arm and (was) light headed,” wrote Kathy.

The ambulance told the pair to go to the emergency room, but their scans came back fine and personnel released the couple, says the post.

Kathy Sigle added that she expects to be sore and bruised.

“That was a brand new store and a brand new pickup!” she added.

The Rock Springs Police Department, Rock Springs Fire and Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office were on scene at the Maverick located at 1225 Foothill Blvd. due to a vehicle driving into the building, the police department wrote Thursday on its Facebook page, including photographs of a blue Ford Ranger wedged in the building.

“There are no major injuries to the driver or people in the building. The location is closed to the public at this time,” reads the post.

The department’s spokeswoman could not immediately be reached after 5 p.m. Friday for further comment.

Sigle did not immediately respond to a Facebook message request for comment.
