After construction workers found human remains on private property south of Cheyenne on Monday morning, about 50 investigators are now searching for the rest of the body.
Laramie County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Aaron Veldheer said the searchers should be able to conclude their effort within the next 48 hours. The searchers include Laramie County Sheriff’s agents, Laramie County Coroner’s personnel and Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation personnel, said Veldheer.
There may be other agencies involved but these were the ones of which Veldheer was aware of as of his Tuesday afternoon interview with Cowboy State Daily, he said.
The searchers are performing a “grid search” – scouring small spatial squares thoroughly before moving on to the next square.
“So you’re searching in a systematic way, not just randomly walking around,” said Veldheer.
Veldheer said he did not know which parts had been recovered specifically. He deferred that and various other questions to Laramie County Coroner Rebecca Reid.
“While we run parallel investigations, we are looking for different things,” said Veldheer. So far, sheriff’s personnel haven’t seen signs of foul play, he said, adding, “we don’t have any information on cause or manner (of death).”
In a Monday interview, Veldheer said the remains were scattered by weather and/or wildlife. He said these are not a “historic” or archaeological find, but a discovery of current relevance.
Breezy
Reid confirmed she was on scene again Tuesday, when she spoke to Cowboy State Daily. The wind blew audibly throughout the phone call.
“We’re still searching,” she said. Reid said she doesn’t have an update on whether the remains belonged to a male or female, whether they’d been in the field for weeks, months or years, or any other information.
“We won’t know that until the forensic anthropologist (makes a finding),” she said.
