Turns out, even choppier waters lie ahead for our Democrat friends, who pollsters tell us belong to The Party that Went to College.
You'd think it would be smooth sailing for these educated folks who are so much smarter than we are.
(Don't believe they're smarter than we are? You just haven't been paying attention. Ask them. They'll tell you how dumb we are. And how smart they are. Trust me, I've lived among these people for decades.)
This past week it went from bad to worse for The Party that Went to College. As far-left crazies from the Lunatic Fringe of the Democrat Party elected lots of socialist-leaning candidates in primary elections across the country – taking full advantage of metastatic Trump Derangement Syndrome - they doubled down on wacky.
We knew the extreme faction of their party wants to “end” law enforcement, close prisons, and return to the days of Joe Biden throwing our borders open to any and all who wanted to come.
I wrote about that last week, in a column headlined, “Is This What College-Educated Democrats Want?” On Facebook, over 500 readers took the time to comment, most giving me the dickens for suggesting that socialism, and in some cases communism, are on the rise in The Party that Went to College.
I was accused of lying, of being a latter day Joe McCarthy seeing communists under every bed, and of being unaware of how comparatively crime-free our nation has become in this era of Brian Kohberger, Luigi Mangione, and Tyler Robinson.
(That last one depends on how you count the numbers. Did Los Angeles get more law-abiding when they decided shoplifting up to $950 in merchandise was a misdemeanor, hardly worth prosecuting? And does Trump get any credit at all for making Washington, D.C. safer, and cutting off the thousands of people illegally crossing the border every day? No, no and no.)
The response to that column was brutal. I'm only glad my mother didn't live to see the terrible things people had to say about her youngest boy, David.
One Facebook comment suggested I was simply lying about this lurch to the left that is going on in the Democratic Party, a trend that is obvious to longtime Democrats like pollsters Doug Shoen and Mark Penn, who are distraught at what has become of their party. It's a major theme in the news, as these socialist-leaning candidates keep winning primary elections.
“Do you pay attention to the news?” I responded to the person who said I was lying. “Apparently not.”
But, all that wasn't good enough for the craziest of the crazy far-left Democrats, who are cheek-by-jowl ideologically with the Democratic Socialists of America party.
They reportedly want to abolish the Electoral College, replace capitalism with something called “social ownership,” nationalize key industries, create “universal government-supported jobs,” expand the House of Representatives, and replace the two-party system. The craziest favor abolishing the U.S. Senate, the Supreme Court, and doing away with the presidency itself, replacing it with a hired manager, under the control of the expanded House.
In the words of the late sportscaster Keith Jackson, “Whoa, Nelly!”
In short, The Party that Went to College has gone off the deep end. And at least so far, the cooler heads that have led the party for years have been unable to calm the waters, root out the antisemitism that is increasingly showing up in their party, move on from single-minded Trump Derangement Syndrome, and hose down the craziest of the crazies.
We've come a long way from the days earlier this year when it looked like Democrats would take over control of the House of Representatives in the November election, and possibly control of the Senate. Maine's problematic Senate hopeful Graham Platner and the far-left lunatics have done much to improve the chances that Republicans will maintain their slim majorities.
And that's a genuine Martha Stewart “Good Thing.”
One would hope that this has placed the supposed superiority of The Party that Went to College in question.
Current events indicate college didn't do our Democrat friends much good.
And let me offer one last suggestion:
All that talk about Democrats being so much smarter than the rest of us?
Might be time to give that a rest.
