The mayor of Afton and his wife will be hospitalized in Idaho Falls, Idaho “for a time,” and the teenage driver who hit them with a car last week will soon be criminally charged, the Afton police chief said Monday.

Mayor JC Inskeep and his wife, Brenda Inskeep, were struck by a juvenile male driving an SUV around 6 a.m. on Thursday while they were on bicycles. The Inskeeps were traveling northbound on a street, as was the SUV.

Afton Police Chief Jason Romberg told Cowboy State Daily on Monday that he spoke with Inskeep, who said he and his wife will be at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for a time. Romberg was not sure of the timeline.

“They’re in good spirits, but they’re going to be there for a while, at least from what he told me,” Romberg said. “I think they’re in the best hands right now.”

The couple were conscious, coherent and speaking to Romberg last week after they were struck by the SUV, but Romberg could not speak to what injuries they received in the crash.

He also could not say how fast the driver was going at the time of the crash or how old the driver is.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol was brought in last week to investigate the crash to avoid conflicts of interest. Romberg said as of Monday afternoon, the crash report had not yet been completed by the highway patrol.

The police chief said criminal charges will be filed against the young driver, but he was unsure what the charges would be.

“This all has to be reviewed by the county attorney so they can decide what charges should be filed,” Romberg said.

Romberg was not sure if a temporary mayor had yet been appointed in Inskeep’s absence, but if not, then he said this will likely be done at next week’s Afton City Council meeting.

In addition to serving as the Afton mayor, Inskeep is also an employee of Lincoln County School District No. 2, where he is the finance director.

The mayor of Afton and his wife were injured Thursday morning when they were struck by a juvenile driver in a sports utility vehicle, the Afton police chief told Cowboy State Daily.

Chief Jason Romberg said Mayor JC Inskeep and his wife, Brenda Inskeep, were struck by a juvenile male driving an SUV around 6 a.m. while they were on bicycles. The Inskeeps were traveling northbound on a street, as was the SUV.

“I don’t believe there was any intentional foul play in this situation,” Romberg said. “But we’re also bringing in the Wyoming Highway Patrol to investigate this incident, so we can avoid any conflict of interest.”

The Afton Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Afton Volunteer Fire Department and the Star Valley Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene on Thursday morning.

Romberg could not speak to the Inskeeps’ injuries as of midday Thursday, but said when he saw them at the crash site, they were both conscious, coherent and each of them spoke with him.

He also could not say how fast the driver was going at the time of the crash or how old the driver is.

Romberg said this is not the first accident of its kind he has seen during his time in law enforcement, but he did note it was the first time it ever involved a town official.

He expected to release more information regarding the crash early next week, once the highway patrol completes its initial crash investigation.

An Afton teenager is recovering in an Idaho hospital after suffering a serious injury when he was kicked in the head during a soccer game in Jackson.

Ethan Nelson, a Star Valley High School varsity soccer player, was taken to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho, after being kicked in the head during a game Thursday.

Reports Friday from a “GoFundMe” page established for Nelson said he was awake and responsive.

According to reports, Nelson was playing as the goalie in Star Valley’s game against Jackson. With seconds remaining in the first half, Nelson dove for the ball and was kicked in the head by another player.

Trainers for both teams provided medical assistance, as did doctors who were attending the game as spectators.

Nelson was driven to St. John’s Health in Jackson before being flown to the Idaho facility.
